A Testament to Divine Mercy: Theology in Art
The Parable Visualized The image of the Good Shepherd seeking out His lost sheep is one of the most beloved themes in Christian tradition. This artwork beautifully visualizes the joy of redemption found in the Gospel of Luke:
"And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost.’" (Luke 15:5-6)
Place this canvas in your living room, hallway, or prayer corner as a constant reminder that you and your family are always guarded under His watchful care.
The Artist & History: James Tissot's Conversion
From Society Life to Sacred Art This painting, originally titled "The Lost Lamb" (or Le Bon Pasteur), is the work of the renowned 19th-century French painter James Tissot (1836–1902).
Early in his career, Tissot was famous for depicting fashionable Parisian society. However, in 1885, he experienced a profound spiritual conversion while in a church. Following this event, he abandoned secular subjects and dedicated the remainder of his life to illustrating the Bible. He traveled extensively to the Holy Land to ensure his depictions of Christ's life were marked by historical realism and deep reverence.
This piece is a stunning example of his later, sacred work, capturing not just the physical landscape of the Gospels, but the overwhelming emotional truth of Christ's love. When you hang this canvas, you are displaying a piece of art history fueled by genuine faith.
